Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra was formed in 1951 and is the final tier in the progression through Gloucestershire Music's Orchestras and Bands.

The orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings during term-time, and may give as many as nine concerts a year, performing programmes that range from the 18th century to the present day.

Membership of GYO is by audition only. String, brass and percussion players need to be at around a grade 7 standard and woodwind players around grade 8.

For further information, see the details on the 'News' page or contact the Orchestra’s Conductor Glyn Oxley.

GYO have an exceptionally busy schedule.  In 2013/14 there are no less than five performances at the Cheltenham Town Hall, Tewkesbury Abbey and Highnam Court.

GYO continue their series of concerts reaching the more remote parts of the county and have raised well in excess of £20,000 for local, national and international charities during the year.

A number of the students then took part in an incredibly successful joint tour to Belgium in 2013, with the county youth wind orchestra (GYWO), performing in such venues as Gent Cathedral, Brussels Cathedral and at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

In 2015 GYO will be touring once again with a five day trip to Germany’s Black Forest.
