Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra was formed in 1951 and is the final tier in the progression through Gloucestershire Music's Orchestras and Bands. The orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings during term-time, and may give as many as nine concerts a year, performing programmes that range from the 18th century to the present day.

Membership of GYO is by audition only. String players and brass players need to be at around a grade 7 standard and woodwind players around grade 8. Further auditions for September 2013 will now be held at the beginning of September, although we are happy to audition players at any time during the year. For further information, see the details on the 'News' page or contact the Orchestra Manager.

GYO had an exceptionally busy schedule in 2012/2013 which began with a performance in the Royal Albert Hall, London as part of the Music For Youth national festival. Further performances have included our annual Christmas concert in Cheltenham Town Hall, narrated by actor Keith Allen, and the annual performance at Tewkesbury Abbey, promoted by the Rotary Club of Tewkesbury. We continued our series of concerts reaching the more remote parts of the county and have raised well in excess of £20,000 for local, national and international charities during the year. A favourite with the students is always our open air 'Last Night of the Proms' style concert in the stunning grounds of Highnam Court and our sixty-second year came to its conclusion with two spectacular performances of Noye's Fludde in Tewkesbury Abbey as part of the Cheltenham Music Festival.  A number of the students then took part in an incredibly successful joint tour to Belgium, with the county youth wind orchestra (GYWO), performing in such venues as Gent Cathedral, Brussels Cathedral and at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

Plans for 2013/2014 include further performances of Noye's Fludde in Gloucester Cathedral with the English String Orchestra, participation in the Music for Youth regional festival, along with our many regular commitments.
