Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra

St Peter's High School, Gloucester - Thursdays 6.30 to 9 pm

Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra was formed in 1951 and is the final tier in the progression through Gloucestershire Music's Orchestras and Bands.

The orchestra rehearses on Thursday evenings during term-time, and may give as many as nine concerts a year, performing programmes that range from the 18th century to the present day.
Membership of GYO is by audition. String players and brass players need to be at around a grade 7 standard and woodwind players around grade 8. The main audition session takes place in late April or early May; however, we are happy to audition players at any time during the year.

For further information contact the Orchestral Manager.

GYO had an exceptionally busy schedule in 2010/2011, raising well in excess of £20,000 for local, national and international charities. An example of this was our concert at Tewkesbury Abbey on 2nd April 2011, an event promoted by the Rotary Club of Tewkesbury. This was a resounding success with fine performances of Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man', Tchaikovsky's 'Romeo and Juliet' Overture, the Barber 'Adagio for Strings' and 'The Planets' (Holst). The brass were supported by students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in a new partnership between the orchestra and the college. The orchestra received a standing ovation at the end of the concert. Our sixtieth year came to its conclusion with a week-long tour to Annecy, France which was a truly wonderful week in every possible sense and involved five performances, all of which were a 'sell out'! Plans for a return visit are already underway.
